Membrane VS Hot Mopping

"I am faced with the same situation in turning a large area into a shower. The membrane's are 40 mil thick and need to be cemented in place or nailed high up the walls. You then need to bring the tar paper from the walls to overlap the membrane. In theory this all sounds easy except the membrane comes in 4 and 5 foot widths and some patching will be required at the seams with pvc cement or specially made corner similar to a doughboy pool with liner.

Any sharp object like a nail head or wood splinter can penetrate the membrane and this can happen over time i.e. pressure from standing on the spot can eventually weaken the membrane.

Hot mopping is still the preferred method for custom installations as it conforms to every nook and cranny. Typically you start with a mortar that is set and sloped and then felt (tar paper) is layered on the floor and walls etc. Hot tar is then mopped on the seams and corners etc and smoothed. Tar does expand and contract with temperature however it doesn't break away and leave voids.

Hot Mop has been used for years for a good reason. It doesn't leak! Membrane is new and requires someone more familiar with installing it. I've seen the Black & Decker books illustrate how it's done along with using cement board.

I preferred the hot mop since my helper was fully familiar with doing this and I could trust the application.

Having the walls plumb rather than using cement board made it much easier to lay tile and this works well with hot mop........."
